What's the difference between Aerobic Fitness & Anaerobic Fitness, and how can you tell?

Anaerobic fitness is the ability to do intense physical work without oxygen. During periods of high-intensity exercise, we use anaerobic pathways to provide enough energy to complete the task. Anaerobic pathways include glycolysis, creatine phosphate, the phosphagen, lactic acid, etc.

In contrast, aerobic fitness refers to sustaining continuous low-intensity exercise. The primary source of energy for aerobic exercise is oxygen. In other terms, the aerobic pathway has more energy that the anaerobic.

For example, if you want to run a marathon, you must first build up your aerobic capacity. If you don't focus on increasing your aerobic capacity, you will not be able finish the race.

Aerobic fitness is also referred to as cardiovascular fitness. The most common methods for assessing cardiovascular fitness include VO2 max testing or step tests.

Test VO2 Max

VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen (O2) used by the body during exercise. This test measures how much oxygen the body can use while exercising.

This is one of the most accurate tests to measure cardiovascular fitness. However, the test can only be administered by highly trained professionals and requires expensive equipment.

Step Tests

Step tests are simple yet effective methods of measuring cardiovascular fitness. You will be asked to walk, jog or run for a specific time on a track. This is based on your age or weight.

These tests can be conducted almost anywhere and are cheap, simple, and easy. You could, for instance, run on a treadmill for two minutes, rest for one minute, and then go back to the starting point for 20 minutes. You should maintain a constant heart rate throughout the session.

This method is known as the "Bruce Protocol". Bruce was himself a runner and developed the protocol after realizing his heart rate wouldn't increase when he ran for longer distances.
